It is a small, bushy woody plant that can reach 40 cm in height. It has small, curved leaves with dark green edges, which are covered in hairs and trichomes. The chemical polymorphism of Thymus vulgaris was initiated by Granger et al. in 1963. Between 1971 and 1986, Passet, Granger, and Vernet et al. identified six chemotypes of thyme: geraniol, α-terpineol, thuyanol, linalool, carvacrol, and thymol.
